~ TEN FOR TEN ~
3/CAMBRIDGE
A personal series of feature projects covering different themes and places.
I am of course referring to the original – Cambridge, UK – not the equally famous one in Massachusetts.
There is evidence that the settlement later known as Cambridge was begun somewhere between 2,000-1,000 BC, and there are limited remains of the Roman fort (castrum) – known as Duroliponte – to the north-west of the city centre. It is most famous of course for its 820 year-old University founded in 1209.
Cambridge fought on the side of parliament during the English Civil War (1642-1651), in which it played a significant role. A war that Parliament won, costing some 210,000 dead at the time (a death toll of around 2,400,000 in today's numbers).
The university of course has a long list of famous alumni, from Stephen Hawking, Robert Oppenheimer, Isaac Newton, and of course the entire cast of Monty Python.
