BACKGROUND

I was twelve years-old when I got the photography bug – and my first camera.

It was a Russian-made Fed III rangefinder camera. Built like a T-72 tank, it withstood lots of abuse from this child novice and survived. I soon graduated first to a Yashicamat, and then to a Rolleiflex, followed in later years by a Practika, Pentax and Nikon.

I had built my first darkroom around 14 years of age, joined one of the UK’s national newspapers at age 16, as a trainee photo-journalist. I went to college at 18 on my days off, studying Print Technology and Graphic Design, and was sent on assignment to war zones at age 20.

Changing to a less dangerous profession of graphic designer I spent most of my career working in Manchester, London and even Princeton, NJ, followed by the last 19 years as Art Director/Production Designer for agencies in New York and San Francisco – all whilst shooting in my spare time.

I now shoot with full frame cameras from Leica, an aging point-and-shoot from Canon, and an iPhone for immediacy – in both colour and black & white.

Post-production editing is made using Adobe Photoshop CC and Pixelmator Pro on desktop, plus Snapseed and reeXpose on mobile. I have photographed, designed and published a number of digital photo books, available on Apple Books.

In college I remember being taught how to etch a plate (a long-dead technology when I was at school), my lecturers insisting we students had to learn the history, and they were right... but digital tools are a whole lot more fun.
