2/LIGHTER LEITER

A personal series of feature projects covering different themes and places.

A feature in homage to the brilliant photographer, and one of my favourites, Saul Leiter. I dubbed this set, a 'Lighter Leiter' since I believe they give a faint nod to Leiter's work and aesthetic.

His style of sometimes painterly images and sometimes quirky candid shots evoke the essence of life and how it was lived by residents, mostly in New York and Chicago where the majority of his work was created.

Leiter's studio was in New York's East Village, now home to the Saul Leiter Foundation which is curating the over 80,000 images of his work.

There are many published volumes of his work, but none better in my view than 'Forever Saul Leiter', a small but packed volume published by Thames & Hudson. Well worth digging out or buying online for a look at a true master of the art.

THE SPECTATOR

Every late June in Brooklyn's Coney Island there is the Mermaid Parade. Full of floats and characters dressed as something fishy. There are tens of thousands of spectators who come down to the shore to enjoy the spectacle, among them this guy. Clearly a resident of Coney Island.

STREET CLEANING

Every morning particularly in summer, building maintenance crews in Manhattan would wash and clean the frontage to their buildings.
